Mission, Vision and Values

The mission of ABA-an IB World School is to provide an international education of the highest quality to enable students to be confident, responsible, caring, life-long learners. Our vision is that ABA students achieve their maximum potential in an environment of intercultural understanding and respect, to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. ABA values communication, diversity, inquiry, integrity, knowledge, open-mindedness, reflection, thinking, and the willingness to take risks.

The School

ABA-an IB World School, founded in 1987, is the first K-12 fully authorized IB World School in the Arabian Gulf region. It is a private, non-profit, English language co-educational day school that offers an academically rigorous K-12 IB curriculum to expatriate students in Muscat, the capital of the Sultanate of Oman.  With more than sixty different countries represented in a school community of 980 students (270 in the high school), ABA promotes academic excellence within a context of intercultural understanding and respect.

Accreditation

ABA is accredited by both the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the Council of International Schools. As an IB World School, ABA is authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (Grades K-5), the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (Grades 6-10) and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (Grades 11-12).

Faculty

ABA recruits highly qualified teachers who provide a supportive international learning environment for students. The 123 faculty members at ABA represent seventeen nations. All teachers at ABA hold at least a Bachelor’s degree and more than 25% have a Master’s degree.  Two faculty members hold a Doctorate.

High School Curriculum

Throughout the four years of high school, all students at ABA work towards the ABA Diploma, a US-style high school diploma that certifies successful completion of at least 25 credits of university-preparatory coursework. In addition, standard coursework in Grades 9 and 10 prepares students for optional examinations in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education system (www.cie.org.uk). In the 2009 exam session, 81% of Grade 10 students sat five or more IGCSE examinations. In Grades 11 and 12, all courses follow the syllabi of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (www.ibo.org). In the Class of 2009, 92% of students were IB Diploma Candidates.

Graduation Requirements

A minimum of 25 credits of high school coursework distributed as follows is required for graduation (one credit is equivalent to one year of coursework).

Weighting, Ranking and the IB Grading System

At ABA, grades are not weighted and students are not ranked. ABA uses the International Baccalaureate 1-7 scale on official transcripts. The cumulative GPA figure only includes courses taken at ABA in Grades 9-12. We suggest correlating the IB scale to an A-F grading system in the following manner:
